John 3:16

Church Growth ScripturesLast Updated: January 3rd, 2021

With everything going on in the world today, churches are called to be a source of light and hope in the darkness by sharing the love of Christ.  During these unprecedented times, churches are experiencing more challenges than ever before as many are operating at a lower capacity or physically closed.  At the same time, people are increasingly suffering from pain, loss, grief, financial hardships, anxiety, and more as a result of COVID-19 making outreach more important than ever.

Despite everything your church might be facing, God can still bless your church.  If you’re a pastor or church leader in need of some encouragement,  we’ve compiled some of the best verses on what the Bible has to say about church growth.  We hope that these church growth scriptures inspire you to not just survive, but thrive during this season, bringing even more followers to Jesus.

Have The Courage To Grow

1 Chronicles 28: 20-21

“Be strong and brave, do the work.  Don’t be afraid or discouraged, because the Lord God, my God, is with you.  He will not fail you or leave you until all of the work for the Temple of the Lord is finished.  The groups of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the Temple of God. Every skilled worker is ready to help you with the work. The leaders and all the people will obey every command you give.”

  • Romans 8:31

If God is for us, who can be against us?

  • Deuteronomy 31:6-8

Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.  The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

  • Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?

Invite Them and They Will Come

  • Luke 14:23

And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.’

  • Matthew 28:19

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

God Gives The Growth

  • 1 Corinthians 3:5-7

What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.

  • Jeremiah 43:10

If you will stay in Judah, I will build you up and not tear you down. I will plant you and not pull you up.

Expect Growth

  • Isaiah 54: 2-3

Make your tent bigger; stretch it out and make it wider.  Do not hold back.  Make the ropes longer and its stakes stronger because you will spread out to the right and the left.  Your children will take over other nations and they will live in cities that were once destroyed.

God Provides Everything You Need To Grow

  • Ephesians 4:11-14

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

  • Acts 16:4-5

As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily.

Expand the Kingdom of God

  • Romans 10:14-15

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

  • Acts 2: 42-47

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

  • 1 Corinthians 9:25

We don’t toil in vain. Every person we’ve helped to discover the kingdom and every life we’ve ministered into wholeness will be a jewel in our crown when Christ arrives. In our darkest moments, we can’t forget that we’re working for a crown that will last forever.

Spread The Love of God

  • Hebrews 10: 24-25

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

  • Romans 10: 14-15

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

  • 2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

  • Mark 13:10

And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

Grow Your Church On A Firm Foundation

  • Matthew 16:18

On this rock, I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

  • 2 Samuel 7: 5-6

This is what the Lord says: Will you build a house for me to live in?  From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until now I have not lived in a house.  I have been moving around all this time with a tent as my home.

  • John 20: 19-23

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so, I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven then; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Persevere Through Every Season

  • Galatians 6:9

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

  • Mark 4: 26-29

And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Grow in Peace

  • Acts 9:31

So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.

  • Psalm 112:7

They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
